The joy and expectations of a perfect 3-day weekend in Boise were beyond what I could have imagined. In a few short days, we were able to enjoy an outdoor memorial, take in the local cultural and enjoy some of the local flavor.
Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial
When visiting a new city, I find at least one educational opportunity. Boise did not disappoint. The Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial was gifted to the City of Boise on August 16, 2002. And now, it remains a treasured space for the locals and visitors alike.
This memorial is worth the visit. But, be sure to bring a tissue. The statue of Anne Frank is surrounded by Idaho stone work and messages that inspire reflection. Depicted as peeking through a window, the Anne Frank statue hides her diary behind her back giving reference to impeding danger. Heart wrenching, yet awe inspiring reading her indelible wisdom and knowing what was to come of her. Dotted with stone benches, plants and water, the space encourages a slow, thoughtful tour.
Additionally, this beautiful educational park is near the Greenbelt and Boise Public Library. The walkway within the memorial connects to a reflective water feature and a walking path that leads to the 9th Street Bridge.
Local Culture
Boise has a laid back vibe making visitors like a locals. Downtown Boise Centre is filled with fun and cultural expression. Friendly people and street music encourage celebration everyday of the week.
When you’re there, be sure to look for Freak Alley. It is between 8th and 9th and Bannock and Idaho. The multi-artist, graffiti inspired work is a wonderful departure from tradition. However, it give a voice through expression that encourages an open mindedness.
Local Flavor
There’s a local brew pub (or two) along the wandering path to Boise Centre. Right off of 8th Street, and close to Freak Alley, is the perfect spot for dinner. Perch yourself in a window seat at Juniper on 8th, and eat and watch. This downtown favorite has mad pizza skills. And let’s not forget their signature spin on the Moscow Mule. What a fantastic find!
A Little Education, Culture and Flavor
The perfect weekend in Boise came to an end. But we left with great memories and plans to return. When open to new ideas and experiences, the whole world awaits.
